This presentation recounts the past, describes the present, and speculates about the future of Chinese Studies in the United States. Hockx will approach the topic from somewhat of an outsider’s perspective. He was educated in the tradition of European sinology, then worked for two decades in the field of Chinese Studies in Britain, before joining the University of Notre Dame in 2016. Hockx will compare and contrast the US situation with his own experiences elsewhere, before focusing especially on the emerging trend away from area studies and towards “global affairs.”
