The Centre for Applied Ethics at Hong Kong Baptist University plans to host the 20th Symposium on Building Chinese Bioethics in Hong Kong on July 9-10, 2026. The theme of this symposium will be “Ethical Reflections on Human-Machine Relations.” The Academic Committee includes Prof. Benedict S. B. CHAN, Prof. KWAN Kai-man, Prof. KWOK Wai-Luen, Prof. Ann Gillian CHU, Prof. Baldwin WONG and Prof. Pak-Hang WONG from Hong Kong Baptist University, as well as Prof. Ellen ZHANG from University of Macao, and Prof. FAN Ruiping from the City University of Hong Kong.

We invite paper submissions focusing on ethical issues arising from the use of advanced biomedical technologies, especially those related to human-machine interactions. Technologies of interest include, but are not limited to: medical imaging machines (MRI, CT, PET, portable ultrasound, etc.), surgical robots (e.g., Da Vinci Surgical System), dialysis machines, ventilators, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), internal nanorobots, biosensors, remote surgery robots, artificial hearts, smart watches, blood glucose monitors, health trackers, gene sequencers, virtual reality (VR) medical devices, AI robots, AI diagnostic systems, AI drug development platforms, 3D bioprinters, brain-computer interfaces, automated sperm screening devices, artificial wombs, cryopreservation tanks, and other high-tech biomedical machines.

Papers should focus on the ethical issues arising from the use of a specific technology, with particular attention to the ethical aspects of human-machine relationships. Authors are encouraged to draw on Chinese ethical traditions, such as Confucianism, Buddhism, Daoism, Traditional Chinese Medicine, the various philosophical schools, or other cultural ethics.

Interested contributors should submit an abstract (including title, main idea, and a brief outline) by March 1, 2026 to cae@hkbu.edu.hk. Selected authors will be invited to submit a full paper (in Chinese or English, 6,000 to 12,000 words, including Chinese and English abstracts, keywords, notes, and references) by June 15, 2026. Papers must be original, unpublished, and must not infringe on others’ copyrights. Copyright of accepted papers will belong to the Journal of Chinese and Comparative Philosophy of Medicine or other selected publishers.

Remuneration:

Accommodation in Hong Kong during the symposium will be provided for participants. In addition, a modest remuneration will be offered for accepted papers. The exact amount will be determined based on available funding and may vary between contributors (estimated range: HKD 1,000 to 2,000 per paper). Final details will be confirmed upon acceptance.
